Hello, my name’s Rhys (and if we’re allowed such things in these days of cultural appropriation awareness my Chinese name is 甫瑞). This site is dedicated to the cinema of Taiwan, with a mix of film reviews and articles from the world of Taiwanese film. It’s for anybody who’s interested in cinema in general, or wants to get to know Taiwan better.
I first got to know Taiwan a little when I went there on a language scholarship just before my final year of a BA in Chinese studies. After graduating I lived there for three-and-a-half years, initially as an English teacher and later as a copywriter and sometime news reader on the English-language radio station ICRT. It was an amazing time and I always feel I’ve left a bit of my heart in Taiwan. There’s the fourth motivation: my deep dive into Taiwanese cinema is one small way I can keep living there.
I started this site not as an expert, but as somebody who wants to understand more about Taiwan. To that end, I’m trying to watch at least one Taiwanese film a week and write a review, along with the occasional article on Taiwanese cinema. At the same time, the idea is to kill another two birds with the same stone – honing my writing and developing my film knowledge.
I hope you enjoy the articles and reviews. There’s no space for comments on the reviews themselves, but do drop me a line if you have any comments/corrections on anything you read.
